Blacksheep Squadron – Rider Development Mission Statement
The Blacksheep Mountain Bike Club is responsible for the rapid growth of trail development, trail infrastructure and the organization of high-quality events. There has never been a better time to ride a mountain bike in Thunder Bay!
In 2026, we’re excited to announce the return of The Squadron.
You may have heard whispers of The Squadron from the far reaches of the Blacksheep universe… This time is going to be a little bit different. The Squadron is a platform for younger riders to get together and improve their fitness and skills in a group setting through structured practices and workouts, with mentorship from adult leaders.
With a focus on racing, whether locally or out of town, Squadron practices throughout the season will be geared towards fitness, technical skills, ride/race preparation and sportsmanship.
We’re offering two to three organized practices per week. On a regular basis, we’ll be inviting skilled local guest riders to lead groups. Squadron riders will absorb skills from the ride leaders, and each other, on their way to improvement. In addition to local riding and racing, there will be opportunities to attend out-of-town races and events with other Squadron riders.
Ultimately, we aim to provide an environment that helps kids build strength, confidence and connections. While going faster is the focus, fun and camaraderie is the real reward.
Additional Squadron Details
Any riders interested in joining The Squadron must be Blacksheep Club Members with an XC racing add-on/membership.
Ages: The program is designed for riders at least 15 years of age, racing in the Blacksheep Advanced and Elite categories.
Bikes: Squadron riders will only need a mountain bike. While we’ll need to ride some paved and gravel roads before trails are ridable, this is a mountain bike group, and mountain bikes will be ridden.
Cost: $50 for the season
