26.08.2007Road #5 J.C. Classic Results & Report

The final race in Blacksheep’s road series went down in late August. The weather was sunny and warm with a slight breeze. Consistent with J.C.’s belief that cycling is a social sport, the race was 69km in length with a 16 km neutral start to give racers the opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Also, it was good to see participation by a number of racers from the Thunder Bay Cycling Club. The route was a loop starting at Hwy 130 (Paipoonge Museum) and included sections of Hwys 61, 608, 595, 588, River Road, Barrie Road and returned to Paipoonge Museum on Hwy 130. Sport and Advanced classes raced the same course.

Results are here

A few highlights:

·          The neutral start was a big hit with a lot of friendly conversation which helped reassure some new and inexperienced riders who were participating in their first ever road race. It also gave a few racers the opportunity to stop and “water the grass” without fear of being dropped.

·          Racing started in earnest on the climb up Moose when Matt DeGiacomo surged into the lead with a major effort that nobody was prepared to match. He stayed away from the Advanced lead group for over 30 minutes until finally being caught, a victim of the aerodynamic advantage of the peleton.

·          The Advanced lead bunch stayed together until a few km before the finish when the jockeying and attacks began. The race ended in a thrilling sprint with 10 riders crossing the line in under a second. It was a photo finish without the benefit of photos, and left timers and spectators alike scratching their heads on the final finishing order. In the end, the top 5 in Advanced were Josh Gillingham, Matt Degiacomo (with a great recovery after his earlier effort), Brody Pasciullo, Sam Loud and Keith Ailey.

·          In Sport class, things were a little different with racers riding in small groups or alone. At the finish, the top 5 were Gerald Hamm, David Pinner, Katie Spittlehouse in a dead sprint over Marilyn Ailey, followed by Thomas Quinn.

Thanks to Keith Ailey for coordinating the race . . . it was a great event, enjoyed by all, and extremely well organized. Also, thanks to David Pinner for assisting Keith and for the awesome route maps, to Paul DeGiacomo and Jordan Gehl who drove the support vehicles, and to all the spectators who helped out and cheered on the racers.

Last but certainly not least, thanks to The Keg and Ming Car Care Centre for sponsoring the event and for the great draw prizes. And as always, thanks to all our Blacksheep sponsors for their ongoing support.

Cheers,

Mike Del Nin
